FINDING A TOP RATED NURSING HOME

Our population is aging. Many of us are becoming guardians and caretakers to our parents and other relatives. And whether a parent or other relative needs a nursing home to recuperate for a short time after hospitalization or for the longer term, one of the hardest decisions we may be facing is deciding which nursing home. Of course, not all nursing homes are equal. While no one can guarantee that you will find the absolute best home, there are things you can do and must do to investigate your choices.

Choosing a nursing home is not an easy task. While we provide you with answers to FAQs and Tips you will find that what we most want to do is serve as a starting point for your search. Please follow the links we provide (particularly to Medicare and AARP) for more in-depth guidance than we can provide on this website.

THINGS TO CONSIDER
NURSING HOMES

  1. Involve your loved one as much as possible; this will be their home for the short term or for the remainder of their life.
  2. Go and visit each facility in person during various times of the day.
  3. Check to see if the facility is clean and does not smell foul.
  4. Watch how the staff does (or does not) interact with the patients.
  5. Schedule appointments with management and staff at the facility to meet with them. Ask them to tell you about the staffing ration (the number of staff to each patient) and the staffing levels at the various shifts in the day. You should also inquire about fall rates, bedsores, and the frequency of doctor visits.
  6. Take a checklist with you. Medicare provides a comprehensive Nursing Home Checklist for you to print out.
  7. Nursing homes are required to make their state inspection reports available to the public. If the staff resists your request, take it as a warning sign.
  8. Say 'hello' to the residents and talk with their family members in an non-intrusive way to learn about their experience t the facility.
  9. Inquire of your own family members, friends and colleagues about advice or tips that helped their family.
  10. Ask reliable sources what do they wish they could have done differently.
